Predictive Analytics and Technology Integration (PATENT) Laboratory

The PATENT Laboratory aims to accelerate advances in several interdisciplinary fields by addressing the challenges in data management, integration, and analytics, as well as predictive modeling and simulation. By integrating various technologies and data sources, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, PATENT will contribute to developing next-generation solutions that are data-driven, resilient, and robust in both real-world and theoretical domains across these diverse industrial sectors, such as engineering, social sciences, agriculture, and more. PATENT conducts fundamental and applied research in

  • Artificial Intelligence,
  • Cybersecurity, and
  • Cyber-Physical Systems.

Lab members have research in the underlying areas, such as

  • Distributed systems,
  • Networking,
  • Knowledge representation and reasoning,
  • Data management and databases,
  • Information retrieval,
  • Machine learning,
  • Natural language processing and understanding,
  • Game theory,
  • Data mining,
  • Information retrieval,
  • Personalization, security and privacy,
  • Web/data mining,
  • Multi-agent systems, and
  • HPCC.

Our core application areas include Predictive Maintenance, Healthcare Management, Cybersecurity, Decision/Policy Support Systems, Internet of Things, and Smart Cities. PATENT fosters comprehensive multidisciplinary and translational research in AI across the institution in addition to a number of the above-mentioned key research topics.  In all of these areas, the combination of well-informed theoretical models empowered by large-scale data resources and their integration allows for exciting insights and applications. It also supports workforce and economic growth in the state through education, technology, and commercialization.

Although PATENT is housed in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the innovative lab facilitates research and educational initiatives focused on broad issues that span multiple disciplines and departments. As a result, it will serve as a university-wide hub to affect greater collective outcomes. Our mission extends that of the Mississippi State University and other centers like CAVS-E, ISER, NSPARC, and SSRC. PATENT is funded by a major endowment from Mr. and Mrs. McKay and several federal grants from DoD, NSF, NSA, DoE, and Army.

Join Us

We are always interested in working with new people. We hold weekly research meetings during the academic year that are open to visitors. You are welcome to join us to find out what we are working on. Please contact us if you are in government or industry and interested in collaborative research, are a prospective graduate student interested in applying to our graduate programs, or are currently an MSU undergraduate student who would like to get involved with research.

Visiting PATENT

Let us know if you would like to visit. Here's a map showing how to get to MSU and some key MSU locations. PATENT is housed in the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering located in Butler Hall.
